The House of Mirth

Edith Wharton was born Edith Newbold Jones in New York City on January 24, 1826, the third child and only daughter of George Fredric Jones and Lucretia Stevens Rhinelander. She was privately educated. In 1885 she married Edward Robbins Wharton, a Harvard graduate thirteen years her senior from wjom she was divorced in 1913. From 1910 onwards she made her home in France. for her achievement as a writer and for her war relief work she was made a member of the Legion of Honour.
