Massasoit of the Wampanoags
l Massasoit was a chief of the Wampanoag Tribe, and considered one of the most powerful native rulers in New England. Also known as Ousamequin or "Yellow Feather", he was born in around 1590 in the village of Pokanoket, near present-day Bristol, Rhode Island. In 1621 he signed a treaty with the Pilgrims, which he faithfully observed until his death, thus allowing the two groups to enjoy a peaceful coexistence. His friendship with the settlers also helped keep the Wampanoags neutral in the Peoquot war of 1636. Weeks includes a brief commentary on Indian Character and Sketches of Other Great Chiefs, Tribes and Nations. Also included is a chapter on Samoset, Squanto and Hobamock, three Early native Friends of the Plymouth Colonists.
