The History of Make-Believe

A theoretically sophisticated reading of Tacitus, especially the "Histories", this work points to a fresh understanding of the logic of Roman rule during the early Empire. It argues that Tacitus writes about the imaginary picture that imperial society makes of concrete conditions of existence.
